This novel is standalone, but in order to really understand it, you need to read The Heritage of Hastur, The Planet Savers and Sharra's Exile. These novels describe important characters involved in The World Wreckers

It is much better to read this novel after the three novels described above, in order to have already a good understanding of Darkover.
